Why Teeth Break

Metro Smile, PC

The First reason a tooth might break is due to a large cavity that weakens the remaining tooth structure. That is why a broken tooth is often repaired with a material that adds strength, such as a crown.

Another reason a tooth might break is from pressure caused by clenching or grinding, which is far more common than most people think. If you have headaches or muscle aches, a bite analysis and a night guard might be exactly what you need!

Teeth also break due to the presence of large, black, mercury fillings. Amalgam fillings, as they have been done in the past, compromise and weaken the remaining tooth. The filling corrodes and leakage occurs underneath the old restoration. Once the tooth is undermined, it will most likely break!

Cracked Tooth Syndrome is a sure sign that a tooth needs help! If you experience cold sensitivity & pain upon biting but the pain goes away upon release, you need a dental exam ASAP!
